From 2009 to 2019 Jaime directed the Sustainable Environmental Systems program at Pratt Institute. A 35 student, Master of Science, known city-wide as an innovative think tank for community-based, climate change adaptation and sustainability studies with a curriculum at the nexus of environmental design, science and policy. Serving as both Director and Associate Professor, Jaime became an urban sustainability thought leader at Pratt and New York City.
During her tenure, Jaime strengthened the 40 credit curriculum by integrating the following key areas:
Urban system designs for water, energy, and solid waste
Sustainable community development
Environmental and social justice
Inter and trans-disciplinary study
Jaime grew the student body from 10 - 60 students (at its peak) by recruiting an international cadre of young artists, designers, scientists and planners focused on the following learning objectives:
The ability to assess and critically examine environmental issues related to water and air quality, solid waste management, urban energy systems, and building performance.
Demonstrate a foundational understanding of the legal, economic and regulatory framework of federal, state, and New York City environmental policy and review.
Learn stakeholder engagement and uphold social and environmental justice while demonstrating the ability to engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary, environmental problem solving.
Develop an understanding of sustainable community development.
Design sustainable environmental policies and plans with verifiable indicators and metrics.
Understand and argue the cost of environmental externalities associated with current economic policy and development.
Develop a baseline level of technical proficiency and professional communication skills: written, oral, and visual.
Responsible for the recruitment and management of Faculty, Jaime did so with the objective of providing students an education in professional practice as well as a professional network of leading edge sustainability practitioners.
